Why I love Genealogy & A little family Story time!

If you know me, you know that I am absolutely obsessed with my genealogy. I love the pursuit of family history. Finding stories that we have never heard before or finding evidence to collaborate the crazy stories told through the family that is why i love genealogy. The story that started this whole journey told to me by my Uncle Bill.

why i love genealogy
Uncle Bill

A story about his grandfather, who he was named after William “Bill” Carnagey as well. Getting into a fight sometime before 1907, he shoots the sheriff. Thinking he killed him he fled, leaving his wife with 5 small children. A posse is formed, going after him it was never known if he ran somewhere starting a new life. There were rumors that the posse found him, killing him and leaving his body buried out in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma.

This is one that I have never been able to find a confirmation to what happened to Bill, despite all my research. Anyway, the years of research I have done I have never been able to find the answer. I am sure I may never find it, but I am okay with that. I have found out a lot of interesting stuff over the years though. Whether it be my Great Grandfathers Draft card or the article about my Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather being murdered by his neighbor, because no one waited on him for lunch. If You want to read the story it’s here. Than to find out that the man that killed him is only convicted of Manslaughter.

Why I Like Studying Family History

Studying family history has always been a passion of mine. There are several reasons why I find it so fascinating and rewarding. Here are a few of the main reasons:

Connection to the Past

Studying family history allows me to connect with my ancestors and understand where I come from. It’s incredible to think about the lives they lived, the challenges they faced, and the decisions they made that ultimately led to my existence. By learning about their stories, I feel a deeper connection to my heritage. This is just one of the reasons why I love genealogy.

Our connection to the past is what shapes who we are today. The experiences, traditions, and memories of our ancestors have a profound impact on our present lives. Whether it’s through stories passed down through generations, cultural practices, or even genetic traits, there are countless ways in which we are connected to those who came before us. It’s important to remember and honor our past, as it provides us with a sense of identity and belonging. Also, by understanding where we come from, we can better understand ourselves and our place in the world. Our connection to the past is a powerful force that influences our decisions, beliefs, and values, making it an integral part of who we are as individuals and as a society.

Discovering Family Stories

One of the most exciting aspects of studying family history is uncovering long-lost family stories. Whether it’s tales of adventure, love stories, or even scandals, each story adds a layer of richness to my family’s history. It’s like piecing together a puzzle and discovering hidden gems along the way.

Understanding Family Traits

Studying family history can also provide insights into family traits and characteristics that have been passed down through generations. It’s fascinating to see how certain traits, talents, and even physical features can be traced back to ancestors who lived centuries ago. This understanding can help me appreciate and embrace my family’s unique identity.

Preserving Family Legacy

By studying family history, I am also preserving and documenting my family’s legacy for future generations. It’s important passing down stories, traditions, and memories so that they are not lost over time. I want my children and grandchildren to know where they come from and the history that has shaped their family.

Connecting with Relatives

Studying family history has also allowed me to connect with distant relatives and build relationships with extended family members. It’s amazing to discover cousins, aunts, uncles, and other relatives who share a common ancestry. These connections can lead to new friendships and a sense of belonging within a larger family network.

Conclusion

In conclusion, studying family history is a rewarding and enriching experience that allows me to connect with my past, discover family stories, understand family traits, preserve family legacy, and connect with relatives. These are just a few reasons why I love genealogy. It’s a journey of exploration, discovery, and connection that has brought me closer to my roots and helped me appreciate the rich tapestry of my family’s history.
